چکیده

In the last two decades the genetic and molecular research on floral development has advanced tremendously. Initially the research focused mostly on the two species of which the homeotic floral development mutants formed the basis for the ABC‐model: Arabidopsis and Antirrhinum. In recent years the importance of studying a wider range of species, especially in an ‘‘evo‐devo’’ context, has become more and more evident. This review summarizes advances in the understanding of the genetic control of floral induction, inflorescence formation, and floral organ formation in Petunia. Moreover, we put the knowledge on Petunia floral development in the broader perspective of what is known on floral development in other species, thus pointing out diVerences and resemblances in the regulatory systems that ultimately form the basis for the enormous variation in flower shapes.

Redefining C and D in the petunia ABC.

According to the ABC(DE) model for flower development, C-genes are required for stamen and carpel development and floral determinacy, and D-genes were proposed to play a unique role in ovule development. Both C- and D-genes belong to the AGAMOUS (AG) subfamily of MADS box transcription factors. We show that the petunia (Petunia hybrida) C-clade genes PETUNIA MADS BOX GENE3 and FLORAL BINDING PR...

Dissection of floral pollination syndromes in Petunia.

Animal-mediated pollination is essential in the reproductive biology of many flowering plants and tends to be associated with pollination syndromes, sets of floral traits that are adapted to particular groups of pollinators. The complexity and functional convergence of various traits within pollination syndromes are outstanding examples of biological adaptation, raising questions about their me...

Molecular and genetic mechanisms of floral control.

In the last 15 years, knowledge of the molecular and genetic mechanisms that underlie floral induction, floral patterning, and floral organ identity has exploded. Elucidation of basic mechanisms has derived primarily from work in three dicot species: Antirrhinum majus, Arabidopsis thaliana, and Petunia hybrida. Although Antirrhinum and petunia have contributed fundamental breakthroughs to our u...

Reverse genetics of floral scent: application of tobacco rattle virus-based gene silencing in Petunia.

Floral fragrance is responsible for attracting pollinators as well as repelling pathogens and pests. As such, it is of immense biological importance. Molecular dissection of the mechanisms underlying scent production would benefit from the use of model plant systems with big floral organs that generate an array of volatiles and that are amenable to methods of forward and reverse genetics. One c...

Petunia as a Model System for the Genetics and Evolution of Pollination Syndromes

In recent years Petunia has become a promising model system for studying the genetics and evolution of pollination syndromes. Here we provide a brief introduction to the issue of pollination syndromes, explain why Petunia is a suitable model for its study, present useful background information about pollinators and plants, review recent studies, and discuss questions related to the genetics and...
